Pharmicell gets approval for clinical trials on impotence therapy in collaboration with Seoul Asan Medical Center

 

Pharmicell(005690, co-headed by Kim, Hyeon-Soo and Kim, Seong-Rae) announced that it has received approval for clinical trials (phase 1) on ‘Cellgram-ED’, a stem cell therapy for impotence.

 

The trial will be conducted in collaboration with Kim Chung Soo from Department of Urology, Asan Medical Center.

 

“Since there is no fundamental treatment for impotence worldwide, the academia has a high expectation for the stem cell treatment,” said Prof. Kim Chung Soo who led non-clinical researches for approval sponsored by the government as part of a national project from Dec. 2012.

 

The agreement on joint-research with Prof. Kim Chung Soo from Asan Medical Center is intended to serve the clinical trials on stem cell therapy for impotence along with the development of stem cell therapy on another indicant.

 

 “There is no doubt that the stem cell-based industry will grow as a big market. I would like to get useful outcomes from this clinical research to let the academia know the effectiveness of this impotence therapy and it will eventually contribute to creating a stable market for the therapy,” Kim Hyun Soo, CEO of Pharmicell.

 

He more added, “Stem cells’ effects in promoting neuranagenesis, preventing apoptosis of smooth muscle cells of Corpus spongiosum penis, helping regenerating endothelioid cells , and creating new blood vessel will provide a new solution to treating intractable impotence.”

 

Although there are some treatments for impotence such as PDE5-I and vasodilator injection into corpus cavernosum, the effects are not lasting and satisfying. In the end, many patients are left with penile implants surgery as their last option. Yet, since the surgery entails several complications including infection, pain, penile curvature, mechanical insufficiency and leads to the loss of ability to create erections voluntarily, developing treatment for the symptoms is urgently needed.
